Slip Properties

This relates to loss of slip on plastic films, surface tackiness of polymers and variation in slip resistance (e.g. floor tiles and laminates), change in friction properties (e.g. coatings, plastics, ceramics).

Cause:

  • Surface contamination
  • Surface segregation e.g. bulk-to-surface migration of additive(s)
  • Surface topography and roughness
  • Environmental degradation (“ageing”)
  • Surface damage e.g. chemical attack, physical/mechanical damage

Analysis:

  • X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) - to evaluate the chemical composition of the surface; provides quantitative elemental and chemical/oxidation state information for all elements except H and He
  • Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) - to evaluate the chemical composition of the surface with particular emphasis on organics
  • Optical Profilometry - to measure surface topography and roughness
  • Atomic Force Microscopy - to measure surface topography and roughness.
