Passivation Test - Test Method - ASTM A967
Title
ASTM A967-05 Standard Specification for Chemical Passivation Treatments for Stainless Steel Parts.
Overview
Different treatments are available and outlined for stainless steels to remove free surface iron or passivate. The standard proscribes a number of methods that can be used to assess that passivation has been effective. Two such methods are available through Lucideon.
Applications and Benefits
The primary purpose of stainless still is to avoid corrosion, however, residual surface iron will still corroded if present. Confirmation of the removal of the surface iron through passivation is essential to ensure that the parts or components will perform satisfactorily.
Lucideon is able to confirm passivation using two tests Practice B High Humidity and Practice D Copper sulphate test.
Form of Results
Both Practice B and D are visual tests to assess the presence of incomplete passivation. Samples are passed only if no rust or staining or copper deposits are observed.
