Following on from his education, Simon began his career at Lucideon 39 years ago in physical testing for construction. Over time Simon's role developed to also encompass ceramic and refractory testing. Simon still remains in this department and three years ago got promoted from laboratory manager to technical manager.

Simon is a member of the Institute of Refractory Engineers and a director of the UK Slip Resistance Group, and sits on The Tile Association (TTA) technical committee and on BSI committees CW/029 for tableware, B507/7 and European committee TC 339 for slip resistance of pedestrian surfaces.
